Which Exams to Take: DELF, DALF, TCF or TEF?
- A French learner may want to demonstrate his linguistic competence at some tests and exams. Asians are even more obsessed with assessing their performance to identify what skill level they are at, given the heavily examination-oriented culture. Here comes the question: Which French exams should I take?
- It seems that you are not the only one who asks the same question. Everyone has to also seek the right exam to prove his linguistic capability, as a certificate can help him to apply for educational institutions or for work culture. Anyway, to demystify the issue, I try to dig into four different types of exams: DELF, DALF, TEF,TCF
- DELF DALF Composed AND correspond to the levels of language proficiency BY the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFRL). The DELF and DALF examinations are available in 175 countries.
- Test d’Evaluation de français (TEF) (admininstrered, organised and monitored by the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Paris)
- Test de Connaissance de français (TCF) (admininstrered, organised and monitored by the CIEP(Centre international d’étudespédagogiques)
About exams
- Diplômed'étudesen langue française (DELF)
The Diplômed'étudesen langue française (English: Diploma in French Language Studies), or DELF for short, is a certification of French-language abilities for non-native speakers of French administered by the International Centre for French Studies (Centre international d'étudespédagogiques, or CIEP) for France's Ministry of Education. It is composed of four independent diplomas corresponding to the first four levels of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages: A1, A2, B1 and B2. Above this level, the "Proficient User" divisions are certified by the DALF. The examinations are available in three varieties: "DELF Prim" which is for Primary school students (only available at A1 level), "DELF Junior et Scolaire" which is aimed at secondary-school aged students and "DELF Tous Publics" which is aimed at adults. Each variety is worth exactly the same and results in the awarding of the same diploma, but the material is varied to ensure that it is appropriate for the target cohort. DELF certificates are valid for life and do not expire DELF and DALF are official certifications awarded by the French Ministry of Education to certify proficiency in the French language of non-native speakers of French. The certificates are internationally recognized and often used by foreign ministries of education (Ministry of Human Resource Development in India) to assess the linguistic skills in the French language.
- Diplômeapprofondi de langue française (DALF)
The Diplômeapprofondi de langue française (English: Diploma in Advanced French Language), or DALF for short, is a certification of French-language abilities for non-native speakers administered by France's Centre international d'étudespédagogiques, or CIEP, (International Centre of Pedagogical Studies) for the country's Ministry of Education. It is composed of two independent diplomas corresponding to the top two levels, C1 C2, of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. Level C2 is the highest level attainable according to this framework, denoting mastery and proficiency in the French language. The "basic" and "independent" divisions of language proficiency are certified by the DELF levels A1 to B2.
- Test d'évaluation du français (TEF)
The Test d'évaluation du français (TEF) is a test of fluency in French for non-native speakers. It is awarded by the CCIP. It is often required to be admitted into universities and is recognized by the Federal government of Canada as a proof of fluency in immigration procedures.
The test is made up of three mandatory and two optional sections. The reading, listening, grammar and vocabulary sections are mandatory and must be taken together, while the writing and speaking sections are optional and can be taken separately.
The Federal Government of Canada requires both mandatory and optional section for immigration purposes.
- Test de connaissance du français (TCF)
The Test de connaissance du français (TCF) is a language placement test for non-native speakers of French. It is administered by the Centre international d'étudespédagogiques (CIEP) for the French Ministry of Education. It fulfils French language entry requirements, can be used to demonstrate language ability for job applications or for personal use, and is used by Québec for immigration procedures.
Older adolescents, adults, students, candidates for acquisition of French nationality by marriage or naturalization, migrant adults.
The TCF follows the European standards for language tests as set forward in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages and is equal to DALF, also offered by the CIEP.
Lowest level is A1 indicating beginner, top fluency levels are C1 and C2.
Level C1 and C2 indicate advanced mastery of French. French university Sciences-Po uses TCF level C1 as the primary language prerequisite for evaluating the abilities of non-native speakers to follow academic discussions and carry out academic research in the French language.
The test is made up of compulsory and optional sections. The reading, listening and language structures sections are mandatory while the writing and speaking sections are optional.
DELF - (Diplômed'Etudesen Langue Française)
About DELF
DELF (Diplômed'Etudesen Langue Française) is official qualifications awarded by the French Ministry of Education to certify the competency of candidates from outside France in the French language. DELF is composed of 4 independent diplomas that correspond to the levels of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.
Detailed information on the examinations
- All of the examinations have been designed to reflect the principle of action used by the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, which defines users of a language as social actors who have tasks to perform (that are not only linguistic) in given circumstances, in a given environment and within a specific area of action, which may be personal, public, academic or professional.
- These examinations are based on the knowledge, expertise, interpersonal skills and learning skills that are part of the ability to communicate by way of language at linguistic, sociolinguistic and pragmatic level. This ability can be used when performing varied language activities in comprehension, expression, interaction and mediation.
- The examinations were therefore created to include the four skills at every level, with varying degrees of interaction and mediation required depending on the level. A mark of at least 50/100 is required in order to be awarded the diploma.
- It must be remembered that neither the linguistic competency nor the adequacy of communication of spoken and written language can ever be evaluated in absolute terms. Rather, the minimum requirements for each level are different, and candidates cannot be penalized for not having knowledge that will come from future learning. The National Commission has created a short description of the expected content (expertise and morph syntactic content). If you would like more information, please see the "reference levels for national and regional languages".
Why take a DELF?
It is an official, quality diploma, harmonized with the levels of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages .This diploma is recognized worldwide, and is valid for life.
Depending on the level passed, the DELF can develop a curriculum vitae (CV) and make it easier to get a job in a company where the language spoken is French.
The DELF B1 allows to obtain French nationality. The DELF B2 , and more and more the DALF C1, allow students to return to French, European or French-speaking universities, and to certain grand schools and colleges
- If you are not French and would like your French skills to be recognized for personal or professional purposes.
You can take DELF and/or DALF.
- If you are a non-French-speaking French person.
You can obtain authorization from the National Commission for DELF and DALF to take the DELF examinations. The DELF certificate is suitable for language learners of all levels, and there are a number of purposes for which students usually take the exam.
- If you wish to study a bachelor’s degree at a French university, you have to pass DELF B2 for entry into the first year.
